JBN Mechanical Heating and Air Conditioning
State College's Trusted, Local HVAC Expert
Residential AC Replacement in State College, PA
Your old central air conditioner has been running for years. When it starts giving you trouble, you deserve a straight answer — not a high-pressure pitch from a commissioned salesperson.
At JBN, nothing happens without first understanding what's wrong and what it would cost to fix it. That matters more than you might think.
A $500 repair that buys two more years of useful life is hard to beat. Factor in the typical 10-year payback on a new system and the math is clear — extending the life of what you have is often the right call. I'll tell you that even when it means you don't buy a new system from me. You won't hear that from the private equity-owned companies dispatching commissioned techs in this area. I've been asked for dozens of second opinions after their sales visits. I know exactly what their playbook looks like.
My approach is different — and old-fashioned by today's standards. I want to help people in this community first, and earn the kind of trust that pays off over time. It's not complicated. It's just how I think a local business should operate.
JBN Mechanical installs American Standard and Mitsubishi central air conditioning systems for homeowners in State College and the surrounding communities. Owner-operated since 2012. No commissioned salespeople. No iPad pricing gimmicks. Just an honest recommendation and a detailed written proposal — that evening.

So what are the signs you may need something new?
Not every AC problem means replacement. I'll always look at repair options first — unless you've already made up your mind. But here are the signs that usually point toward a new system being the smarter move:
If Your system is 15 years old or older and...
• Repair costs are approaching 50% or more of what a new system would cost
• Your home still never gets comfortable, even after service
• Your electric bills have been steadily climbing with no explanation
• The system uses R-22 refrigerant (phased out — refrigerant is now extremely expensive) • You're seeing repeated compressor or coil failures
• Your system runs constantly but can't keep up on hot days
If you're not sure, call me. A second opinion from an independent contractor, not someone who earns a commission on what you buy — is worth a phone call.
AC Systems We Install
American Standard Central Air Conditioners
American Standard makes some of the most durable, efficient central air conditioning systems available. I've been an Authorized American Standard dealer since 2017 and have won multiple dealer awards — because these systems, properly installed, deliver outstanding long-term performance. We install both standard single-stage and variable speed systems. Variable speed technology is a significant upgrade in comfort — the system ramps up and down to meet demand rather than cycling on and off at full blast. The difference in how your home feels is immediately noticeable.
Mitsubishi Central Systems
While Mitsubishi is best known for ductless mini-splits, they also offer ducted systems that work exceptionally well in homes with existing ductwork. If your existing ducts are in good shape and you want Mitsubishi's engineering behind your central AC, we can make that happen.
Climatemaster Geothermal Systems
Existing system replacements using your existing well is our specialty, and with Climatemaster you get the best the current technology has to offer without the hassle of reconfiguring your whole system. I have installed and repaired hundreds of geothermal systems in the area and I'm confident that todays new systems will save you money now.
A Note on R-454B Refrigerant
New residential AC systems installed today use R-454B — a modern, environmentally friendlier refrigerant that replaces the older R-410A. All new systems we install use R-454B compliant equipment. If your existing system uses R-22 (the old standard, now phased out), replacement is almost always the right financial decision — R-22 refrigerant is now extremely expensive to source.

Common Questions about AC Replacement
How do I know if I need a repair or a full replacement?
The honest answer is: it depends on the age of the system, the nature of the failure, and the repair cost relative to replacement. I'll always walk you through both options with real numbers. If repair makes financial sense, I'll tell you. I don't make money recommending replacements people don't need — my reputation depends on the opposite.
What size AC system do I need?
Bigger is not better with air conditioning. An oversized system will short-cycle — it turns on and off too quickly, leaving your home humid and uncomfortable and wearing the equipment out faster. This was more common 25 years ago but it still happens today. I size systems based on your home's square footage, layout, insulation, window area, and sun exposure. I won't just swap in the same size as what you had without checking the math. Remember however that residential systems are sold in capacity increments of 6-12,000 Btu's so it's pretty hard to get it wrong in homes that are less than 3000 square feet.
How long does a new AC system last?
A properly sized and installed system from a quality manufacturer, with regular filter changes, will typically last 15–20 years. You get what you pay for applies however. Cheaper brands die sooner than some of the brands we install. Oversized systems or poorly installed equipment often fail in 10 years or less. Installation quality matters enormously — and that's something the big corporate chains often cut corners on. But without question the most common issue that I find is that people simply don't change their filters often enough.
Do you offer financing?
Financing options are available through our equipment partners. Ask me about this when we speak — I'll point you toward the options that make the most sense without steering you toward anything that doesn't benefit you. Watch out for the retail lenders being promoted by the big guys. Drop the terms and conditions statement into an AI and ask about the risks before deciding about a Wells Fargo deal or Synchrony. There's plenty to be worried about.
Do you service what you install?
Yes. We can provide you with an annual service contract. However in almost every case, the systems we install are easily serviced by simply replacing a filter a few times a year and pouring a little water and bleach down a drain. We make access to these item easy for homeowners, and what we use is available almost anywhere. ***If there is trouble, I'm not a company that hands you off to someone else. If something comes up after installation, you call me directly 24 hours a day with few exceptions.
