Residential AC Replacement in State College, PA

Your old central air conditioner worked hard for a lot of years. When it's time to replace it, you deserve a straight answer about what you need — not a high-pressure pitch for the most expensive system on the lot.

JBN Mechanical installs American Standard, Carrier, and Mitsubishi central air conditioning systems for homeowners in State College and the surrounding communities. Owner-operated since 2012. No commissioned salespeople. No iPad pricing gimmicks. Just an honest recommendation and a detailed written proposal — that evening.

Signs Your Central AC System Needs Replacing

Not every AC problem means replacement. I'll always look at repair options first — unless you've already made up your mind. But here are the signs that usually point toward a new system being the smarter move:

Your system is 15 years old or older

• Repair costs are approaching 50% or more of what a new system would cost

• Your home still never gets comfortable, even after service

• Your electric bills have been steadily climbing with no explanation

• The system uses R-22 refrigerant (phased out — refrigerant is now extremely expensive) • You're seeing repeated compressor or coil failures

• Your system runs constantly but can't keep up on hot days

If you're not sure, call me. A second opinion from an independent contractor — not someone who earns a commission on what you buy — is worth a phone call.

How JBN Mechanical Handles Replacements Differently

Most HVAC replacement calls today involve a corporate-owned company sending out a commissioned salesperson. They'll diagnose your system quickly, tell you it needs replacing, and wave an iPad in your face with a "today only" price. The discount isn't real. The urgency is manufactured. And the system is usually oversized for your home.

Here's how I do it instead:

• I evaluate your existing system and give you a fair picture of what's going on — repair vs. replace, and why

• If replacement makes sense, I size the new system for your home — not for a manufacturer's sales incentive

You get a detailed written proposal by that evening, including the specific equipment, the price, and what the installation involves

• No "good/better/best" upsell. No fake seasonal discounts. No pressure.

• I carry American Standard, Carrier, and Mitsubishi — three of the most reliable brands available — and I'll tell you which one makes sense for your home and budget

My business runs on word-of-mouth and honest reviews. That means I have every reason to give you a straight answer, and no reason to oversell you.

AC Systems We Install

American Standard Central Air Conditioners

American Standard makes some of the most durable, efficient central air conditioning systems available. I've been an Authorized American Standard dealer since 2017 and have won multiple dealer awards — because these systems, properly installed, deliver outstanding long-term performance. We install both standard single-stage and variable speed systems. Variable speed technology is a significant upgrade in comfort — the system ramps up and down to meet demand rather than cycling on and off at full blast. The difference in how your home feels is immediately noticeable.

Carrier Central Air Conditioners

Carrier offers a strong lineup of high-efficiency central AC systems. For homeowners who want a proven, widely-supported brand with excellent parts availability, Carrier is a solid choice. We'll recommend the right model for your home's size and layout — not just whatever happens to have the highest margin.

Mitsubishi Central Systems

While Mitsubishi is best known for ductless mini-splits, they also offer ducted systems that work exceptionally well in homes with existing ductwork. If your existing ducts are in good shape and you want Mitsubishi's engineering behind your central AC, we can make that happen.

A Note on R-454B Refrigerant

New residential AC systems installed today use R-454B — a modern, environmentally friendlier refrigerant that replaces the older R-410A. All new systems we install use R-454B compliant equipment. If your existing system uses R-22 (the old standard, now phased out), replacement is almost always the right financial decision — R-22 refrigerant is now extremely expensive to source.

What to Expect with a JBN AC Replacement

Here's what the process looks like from start to finish:

  • You call or text John at (814) 240-2455, or submit a request online

  • We schedule a time for me to evaluate your current system and measure your home

  • That evening, you receive a written proposal with the specific equipment and total installed price

  • No haggling. The price I send is the price you pay.

  • Installation is typically scheduled within 1–2 weeks depending on the season

  • Most standard central AC replacements are completed in one day

  • After installation, I walk you through the new system, the thermostat, and what to watch for

  • You get full manufacturer warranty documentation and my personal support going forward

Common Questions about AC Replacement

How do I know if I need a repair or a full replacement?

The honest answer is: it depends on the age of the system, the nature of the failure, and the repair cost relative to replacement. I'll always walk you through both options with real numbers. If repair makes financial sense, I'll tell you. I don't make money recommending replacements people don't need — my reputation depends on the opposite.

What size AC system do I need?

Bigger is not better with air conditioning. An oversized system will short-cycle — it turns on and off too quickly, leaving your home humid and uncomfortable and wearing the equipment out faster. I size systems based on your home's square footage, layout, insulation, window area, and sun exposure. I won't just swap in the same size as what you had without checking the math.

How long does a new AC system last?

A properly sized and installed system from a quality manufacturer, with regular filter changes, will typically last 15–20 years. Oversized systems or poorly installed equipment often fail in 10 years or less. Installation quality matters enormously — and that's something the big corporate chains often cut corners on.

Are there rebates or tax credits available?

Yes, depending on the system's efficiency rating, you may qualify for federal energy efficiency tax credits. I'll make sure you know what's available for the system we're recommending. I won't use rebates as a marketing gimmick — but I will make sure you know about the ones that are actually real and applicable to your situation.

Do you offer financing?

Financing options are available through our equipment partners. Ask me about this when we speak — I'll point you toward the options that make the most sense without steering you toward anything that doesn't benefit you.

Do you service what you install?

Yes. I'm not a company that installs systems and hands you off to someone else. If something comes up after installation, you call me directly.
