HVAC Fraud update 7/2026: State College

In the last two weeks I've been called out to three homes here in State College where the homeowner wanted a second opinion. There have been countless situations like this over the past several weeks where I have been left in shock.

House #1: The homeowner was told they needed a complete new system. The quote was $50,000. I inspected the equipment and found that all that was needed was an evaporator coil cleaning and about a pound of refrigerant. That's a routine service call. The system had years of life left in it. And $50,000? Market value for this job is about half of that.

House #2: A split-level home owner was quoted $70,000 for an AC retrofit with ductwork. There is no version of that job that costs $70,000. Maybe 25,000.00.

I'm not going to name the companies. I don't have to. If you've gotten a quote recently that made your stomach drop, you probably already know.

House #3: The homeowner was told they needed a new system claiming refrigerant leaks were so bad that everything they tried to put in- leaked right out. I found that the system was fully charged, no leak, and a bad thermostat. $325 total repair bill. $16,000 was their price for replacement. This was maybe a $10,000 job.

Here's what's happening. Private equity firms have been buying up HVAC companies across Pennsylvania and the country. When investors own your local contractor, the technician in your basement isn't working for you — he's working a sales quota. "Replace, don't repair" isn't a diagnosis. It's a business model.

So here's my advice, and it costs you nothing:

Get a second opinion before any repair or replacement over a few thousand dollars. From me, or from any independent contractor you trust. A legitimate quote survives a second look. An inflated one doesn't — which is exactly why some of these companies pressure you to sign the same day. If you don't they will text you, call you, email you again and again and again.
